The Nuremberg Metropolitan Region owes a great deal of its innovative power to its outstanding research facilities – including the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light, the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits, the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety, and Energy Technology, and the Federal Research Institute of Nutrition and Food in Kulmbach, as well as many other institutions involved in fundamental research and cutting-edge technologies

The Patent Innovation Index shows how innovative the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region is: According to the index, Nuremberg and Middle Franconia are the regions with the highest relevant level of innovation activity in terms of patent applications in the context of both Germany and Bavaria. Internationalization, technological core competencies, and general-purpose technology

  • Internationalization: Rooted in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region, at home throughout the world. Many institutes work on international subject areas (including medicine, energy and the environment, automotive technology, new materials) – from international economic relations and European studies to research and cooperation centers with a focus on China or Korea.
  • Technological core competencies and general-purpose technology: Fields of expertise or clusters include medicine and healthcare, information and communication, energy and the environment, transport and logistics, automotive technology, new materials, and automation and production technology. Important general-purpose technologies include mechatronics, power electronics, optics, lasers and photonics, nanotechnology, natural sciences, biotechnology, and biomedicine.

Science Day in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region

  • Explore science in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region: Every year since 2007, the Science Day in the European Metropolitan Region Nuremberg has been bringing together people from the worlds of science, business, politics, and education. It is a key presentation platform for the scientific landscape in Northern Bavaria and tours the university locations in the metropolitan region.
  • A strong science location: The Science Day is organized by the Science Forum in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region. The forum has more than 70 members who work out the interests and skills of the scientific institutions, helping to make the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region stronger as a science location.
  • Synergies for science projects: Every year, national guest speakers present new content on topical issues. The Science Day thus provides a focal point for discussing scientific and economic matters and enables people to voice their opinions and share their experiences. It creates networking opportunities, generates synergies, and gives its guests a common space in which to initiate collaborations and projects.

The art of innovation is embraced in the European Metropolitan Region Nuremberg in a number of ways and has a long tradition – at the global brands based in the region and the 150 medium-sized hidden champions, in the research facilities, in Medical Valley, at the universities, and at international technology fairs.

A total of 21 universities, around 100,000 students, and almost 50 R&D facilities in the metropolitan region provide the “innovative basis.” What is particularly unique about it all is the fact that the universities are not only located in the cities, but also in rural areas.

The Innovationskunst initiative brings together the metropolitan region’s strengths and showcases its wealth of ideas and innovative power.

The Nuremberg Metropolitan Region is home to a large number of players in the hydrogen sector. Their skills especially lie in the field of research and development involving hydrogen technologies – for effective climate change mitigation and sustainable prospects for society and the economy.

The hy+ label emerged from the HyPowerEMN funding project run by ENERGIEregion Nürnberg e. V. and the hydrogen initiative in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region. It brings together all players, projects, and activities relating to the subject of hydrogen in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region.
